Over the summer, I developed the story of Julie who is looking for her courage and illustrated some of the pages:
Julie is a little girl that is fine as long is it’s light outside. Her parents named her after the sunny month of July, they say she is a child of the sun.
But once it gets dark, the shadows and invisible ghosts come creeping out. They know her and are waiting in the dark dark when Julie lies in her bed. Julie is scared. She is not a child of the sun. She can barely breathe.
Mom and Dad just don’t understand. They say „Have more courage!“
One day everything changes. Julie goes on a journey to overcome her fears and find her courage.
She dives deep all the way to the bottom of the world, but finds nothing.
The climbs up on an ancient tree all the way to the sky, but finds nothing.
She sets out to walk through a magical forest, over the snowy mountains and to the end of the world. But she finds nothing.
Tired, she finally lies in her bed and, awaiting the shadows, she closes her eyes and begins to breathe.
In and out. In and out.
And with every breath she breathes, she begins to feel a little light within her that grows brighter and stronger as she breathes. Until suddenly, the fears, they are gone. And Julie, Julie is a child of the sun again.
The story is meant to help children understand that courage can be learned and trained. It uses a simple method utilized in meditation practice, yoga and therapy, giving children a simple tool to help overcome their fears.
Here are the illustrations I presented at the Frankfurt Book fair on October 11 and 12, 2018.
